As the throttle opens wider via the throttle-grip, the electronic actuator lifts a pin to lock into the inlet camshaft gate. The rotation of the camshaft then permits the pin to draw the camshaft sideways, to bring the more aggressive longer duration cam lobes into line with the valves. When the throttle is closed, the camshaft is pulled back across the cylinder head, and onto the less aggressive smaller profile cam employed for normal use. Either way, the change is practically instantaneous, taking just FIVE milliseconds to accomplish. That’s less than the blink of an eye.

Rolling elements undergo a lubrication regime known as elastohydrodynamic lubrication. In this regime, the fluid film is usually less than one micron, and pressure up to 500,000 pounds per square inch isn’t uncommon. The oil momentarily turns into a solid and elastically deforms the rolling element and the mating surface. Any contamination can interfere with this process with devastating results. Particles present in the load zone cause surface degradation of the mating surfaces and can lead to the generation of more wear particles.

When misalignment between shafts is more than a couple of degrees, or when a lot of torque needs to be transmitted through a wide range of angles, different kinds of couplings are called for. The canonical coupling in this category would probably be the universal joint, commonly used in automotive driveshafts. The familiar design of nested yokes joined by a cross or spider dates back far into history, with early examples showing up on Greek siege engines. The great English scientist Robert Hooke would later study these devices and characterize them mathematically. He realized that the output rotation was not necessarily constant at every angle and worked out how to fix this: a pair of joints at each end of a shaft rotated 90° axially. This arrangement can still be seen on conventional driveshafts for rear-wheel-drive vehicles, with a U-joint at the output of the transmission and another at the differential input.

Some proposed solutions may incrementally extend life or prevent catastrophic failures with early axial-crack detection. For example, an asymmetric torque limiter addresses the root cause – rapid and severe loading that can initiate the stress-induced white-etch area (a subsurface microscopic material alteration) damage. Simple frictional slip torque limiters are commonly used to protect wind turbine drive systems from severe torque overloads, such as generator short circuits. However, no evidence has been found that a basic torque limiter can provide protection against axial cracking. An asymmetric torque limiter has a much lower slip setting in reverse than in the opposite direction. Field tests on wind turbines with and without the asymmetric torque limiter have demonstrated its ability to significantly reduce the maximum reverse torque and rate of torque increase. The device lowers the maximum stress and strain rate caused by the rollers impacting the bearing raceway during a torque reversal. This approach also dampens torsional vibrations to reduce the number of reversals.

I highly recommend against putting bearings in your filament spool holder. If it runs too smooth, it can “run ahead” if the printer feeder, due to the tugs of the print head, and then get more and more unspooled. Causing all kinds of issues, which result in print failures.
